thunder & robbers

Sunday night in Salt Lake City was cool...and scary.

There was the most amazing lighting storm we've ever seen. That was cool.
At 1:00am there was also the loudest thunderclap we've ever heard. That was scary.

Right after that thunder, the power went out everywhere (yes, we were still awake, mostly playing on our iPhones, at 1am).

For some reason, when anything semi-unusual happens late at night, my mind always jumps to one extreme fear: robbers.
Extreme? Yes.
Totally irrational? ...Debatable.

In the darkness, the flashes of light from occasional lightning and the sound of wind rustling trees outside were all suddenly freakin. me. out.
I was sure that at any moment, I'd look up and a scary robber guy would be standing in our bedroom doorway.

As Chas hugged me and rubbed my back he gently told me,
"Babe, you really need to stop equating thunder with robbers."

Some things in life are easier said than done.

i had THE worst sleep on sunday night. we live out in the country and this strange drifter walked by asking if there was any work for him to do because he needed an extra $45. we didn't have anything for him to do, so he went on his merry way.

that night, as i lay in the dark, for some odd reason my brain was telling me that he was coming back to kidnap me! it was all downhill after that...thank goodness for patient husbands!

Chas's comment made me chuckle.

We pay $40/month for adt because of my fear of intruders...so I understand.

Also wanted to let you know that some of your artwork reminds me of Chagall. He is one of my favs!

Aww, What great advice chas! hahaha too funny! I tend to do that too. Except, not with robbers with tornados lol. I always think a tornado is coming if we have a bad thunderstorm. LOL

I am the same way!!! At least once every two or three weeks, Justin has to get out of bed and check the house for "robbers" before I can get to sleep! So irrational, but so scary!!! Love this!

Such a funny story! :) I have some super irrational fears too. Someday I'll get around to posting about them. Thunder is super intense though! {randeashby.blogspot.com}

I've always had a fear of robbers too! Even as a kid, it wasn't ghosts or monsters or anything else that might come around in the dark, but just "robbers."

Haha! That's so cute! I have to say though, that I suddenly have a fear of robbers myself! I think seeing the riots in England has made me nervous that something like that would happen close to me...if someone showed up in my house my only defense would be throwing my sons dirty socks at them!

It's been so long since I've seen a great storm. jealous. love that feeling.

I'm irrational too and probably would have assumed robbers as well.

We loved that lightening storm. I pulled my three year old out of bed, and we watched the storm rage. The sky was so charged that some of the bolts were green. When that loud clap of thunder cracked, Asher held up the toy Alligator he got in Primary and told me that the, "Elegator is a little bit scared, I should stay in the house!" It was cute, and a fun evening:)

Haha oh dear, I have never heard of associating thunder with robbers!!

I love a great thunderstorm. It makes me feel all safe and cozy :) Of course, unless I am not in a safe or cozy place. Then it's just scary.

I'm just scared of thunderstorms, plain and simple! When I was 12 or 13 a house nearby was struck by lightning and burned to the ground. The family was in our ward. No one was killed but they were obviously displaced for a while. It was seriously the loudest crack of thunder I've ever heard! So now when I hear loud thunder, I freak out. Hubby is understanding I guess. He probably just thinks I'm nuts.

i shouldn't laugh but i can't help it! as irrational as some of our fears are, they are still fears! i am scared of sharks and literally won't go in the water. i know it's ridiculous but it still scares me!

I absolutely love thunder. But, sometimes I get an irrational fear of the dark. Especially when I'm home alone. I was even watching Psych once (not scary) and got weirded out by something and then was scared to walk to my car alone that night to go pick up my husband from work. Crazy.

We had a great big power outage a few months back (the entire north eastern part of Mississippi and north western part of Alabama lost power). We lost power for 12 hours (others lost it for days!), but we made the best of it and played Clue by flashlight light!

Home Invaders are a top fear for me too! I get that.

Robbers have always been a huge fear of mine, even as a kid. Which is why I'm happy I know how to operate Rob's gun :) as scary as that is, haha. Yay for awesome husbands!

My husband has been out of town and so sleeping in bed at night I stare at the ceiling freaking out at every possible sound...the rain didn't help haha.

Awww, so cute!

How did I not hear this massive clap of thunder that EVERYONE else did, btw? I am worried now. Robbers are def going to get me and I won't even hear them! Gah!

ahhhh I always think of robbers late at night, when im alone, during scary thunderstorms!! i hate that feeling (yikes!) you are def. not alone ;) xoxo

You guys crack me up! Not that your fear is at all funny...I start having visions of creepos peering in our windows the moment the husband goes upstairs to bed. I'm all for the "going to bed at the same time" anymore! Haha:)

haha! My husband and I live in Bountiful and I totally did the same thing that night!! I got up to look out the window to see if I could see it and ran back to bed, telling my husband, "The light freaked me out again- I felt like some robber/chain saw guy was going to appear in the window when the next flash of lightening came". He just hugged me a giggled. It happens!
